Marvel Studios' Hawkeye is finally here and many fans believe the series will end with Clint Barton passing the mantle to Kate Bishop. Jeremy Renner has opened up about his future with the MCU after the upcoming Hawkeye series, sharing that he doesn't know what will come next.
Hawkeye focuses on Clint post-blip in New York City during the Holidays as he is forced to team up with the young archer Kate Bishop to stop enemies from his past when he was Ronin. Created by Mad Men and Bridgerton's Jonathan Igla, Hawkeye was already being well-received by critics who got an early preview, with many praising the chemistry between Renner and Steinfeld as well as the story's more grounded, street-level feel.
In an interview with GamesRadar+, Renner, who first made his appearance as Clint Barton/Hawkeye in 2011's Thor, revealed that he is unaware of what will come next after Hawkeye but that he is ready excited for the series and ready for fans to experience what he and so many others have been cooking up. "I don’t have a crystal ball, or I’m not a soothsayer,” said Renner. “But having Hailee come in, and these characters, I think it opens it up for six great episodes for this event type of television. After that, I have no idea. But these six episodes are pretty exciting.”
During Hawkeye's press conference, Marvel Studios' president Kevin Feige added that they always wanted to delve deeper into Hawkeye's character and that they couldn't be more excited once the opportunity presented itself. “All of these roles have been fairly small. And then Ultron, we got a little more. And then he just starts stealing all of these scenes. But it was always the intention to explore much more," shared Feige. “The character’s history is vast. And also, the Matt Fraction comics, which I am sure people have been spending a lot of time talking about, was a big tonal inspiration for us. And seeing that and this new dynamic.”
Feige would further explain that Clint's mentorship has always been present and that his favorite scene featuring the character "...is the scene with Clint and Wanda in Sokovia. Where he basically says, ‘When you go out that door, you’re an Avenger.’ And motivates her to join the fight. And that was the kernel of how we could connect our MCU incarnation of Clint Barton into the Matt Fraction storyline in relationship with Kate Bishop.”
In addition to the series' leads, Hawkeye also stars Vera Farmiga as Eleanor Bishop, Kate's mother, Fra Free as the mercenary Kazi, Tony Dalton as Jack Duquesne, Barton's old mentor, Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo, a deaf character who can perfectly copy others' movements, and Zahn McClarnon as William Lopez, Maya's father. A spin-off series based on Echo is already in development.
Hawkeye is now available Disney Plus.
Now that Scarlett Johansson and Disney have settled their legal issues, the actor is set to produce a secret Marvel non-Black Widow project.
